How do I know if my window frames are rotting?

There are two types of decay within window frames with both wet rot and dry rot occurring in different conditions.

  • Wet rot: when timber is exposed to high moisture levels, leading to soft, spongy wood and a musty smell.

  • Dry rot: thrives in damp conditions but spreads even when the wood appears dry, causing brittle and cracked timer.

How do I know if my windows are blown?

Commonly known as failed double glazing, occurs when the seal between the glass panes breaks or degrades, allowing moisture to seep in. If you're seeing condensation, mist, or fog trapped between the panes, it's a clear sign your windows are blown. Other indicators include a hazy appearance, reduced insulation, or visible cracks in the frame or glass.

Living with blown windows can lead to heat loss, higher energy bills, and even damp or mould problems, especially in poorly maintained housing. If the Council or Housing Association hasn’t repaired damaged windows despite being informed, you could be eligible to make a claim!
